Data Unit Converter

Convert bits, bytes, decimal and binary units up to terabytes. Exact conversion factors, explicit rounding and local result copying.

Choose source and target units: b means bit, B means byte. Decimal and binary prefixes are distinguished.

Input

Data Unit Converter

Up to 24 integer digits and 18 decimal places. Use a dot or comma, with no grouping or exponent; write 0.5 rather than .5.

Enable JavaScript for local conversion; the guide remains accessible.

Results

Enter a value and choose the units.

Bits, bytes and precision

One byte contains 8 bits: 1 B = 8 b. Decimal units use powers of 1,000: 1 MB = 1,000,000 B. Binary units use powers of 1,024: 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B.

b and B are case-sensitive. kb, Mb, Gb and Tb mean decimal bits; kB, MB, GB and TB mean decimal bytes. Kib, Mib, Gib and Tib mean binary bits; KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB mean binary bytes.

Calculations use BigInt integers and exact fractions, without intermediate floating-point arithmetic. The permitted 18 input decimal places can produce up to 61 exact output decimal places. Input limits count leading zeros too; at most 64 raw characters including surrounding spaces.

The display supports 0 to 18 decimal places; an exact output can exceed input limits when reused. No exact round trip is promised from a rounded result. This tool does not calculate throughput or transfer time.

This tool’s code neither sends nor stores values. Third-party scripts and extensions can technically read the page; other applications may access the clipboard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB means one million bytes; MiB means 1,048,576 bytes. These prefixes are not interchangeable.

Which value is copied?

The exact value, without unit, using a decimal dot and no grouping. The rounded display remains separate and is not copied by this button.

Which values are accepted?

Non-negative numbers with up to 24 integer digits and 18 decimal places. A dot or comma is accepted as a single decimal separator; signs, exponents and thousands separators are rejected.
